DCOF 0.42 Is a Floor, Not a Finish Line: Slip Resistance in Senior Living

Why the ANSI A326.3 minimum is only the starting point for assisted living and memory care corridors — and what to specify instead.

What DCOF actually measures

Dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) under ANSI A326.3 measures wet slip resistance on a level surface using a standardized sled. A reading of 0.42 is the published minimum for interior spaces expected to be walked on when wet — it is a pass/fail threshold, not a performance target.

In senior living, the walking population is slower, uses assistive devices, and has a materially higher injury cost per fall. That changes the math: a floor that barely clears 0.42 in a lab may behave very differently after two years of cleaning chemistry and burnishing.

Where we spec above the minimum

Bathing rooms, spa and salon areas, entries within the first 15 feet of an exterior door, and any dining room where liquids are carried by residents. In those areas we look for 0.55+ wet DCOF or a textured sheet product with a welded seam system.

Corridors are the opposite trap: too much texture creates cart drag, wheel chatter, and a surface that traps soil. Corridors want a consistent, cleanable 0.42–0.50 with a wear layer that will not polish smooth.

The maintenance variable nobody specs

Slip resistance degrades with the wrong chemistry far faster than with foot traffic. High-residue neutral cleaners and over-diluted rinses build a film that can drop effective DCOF below the published number within 18 months.

Put the manufacturer's approved cleaning chemistry into the closeout documents and into the housekeeping contract. A floor is only as slip resistant as the last thing mopped onto it.
